Inkjet Printing – Fine Art Media
Many artists and photographers prefer to print on matte surfaces rather than the traditional photographic papers. Often these surfaces provide a subtle texture that suits the subject matter better than a gloss or lustre paper. One of the great benefits of matte surfaces is the reduction in reflective surfaces once the work is framed behind glass.
We offer three different media types for our Fine Art printing services. All our matte media printing is done on the Z3100 using matte black ink.
Museo Portfolio Rag 300 gsm: This fine printing paper is made from a 100% cotton rag substrate which is pH neutral and acid free and contains no optical brighteners. It has a brightness value of 91 and the printing surface is smooth with the faintest hint of texture. It provides a wide colour gamut when printed with matte black ink.
Museo Max 250gsm: This is a natural white paper with a delicate texture. It is also 100% cotton and acid free.
Hahnemuhle William Turner 310 and 190gsm: This paper is from the famous German paper manufacturer and offers a Natural white, 100% rag, age resistant, printable on one side, fine toothy surface. The surface is akin to a watercolour paper and suits textured subjects like rock really well. We have printed several exhibitions on this fine paper. It is great for that traditional water colour look and can be enhanced by edge ripping for a torn paper look.
Preparing a image for printing on Fine Art Matte media: A couple of things to note when preparing your image for printing on these surfaces.
- Fine art matte papers are a flatter (lower dynamic range) medium than other photo type papers. You may, therefore, need to add some contrast and saturation to you image before printing it to attain a snappy looking print. The best way to do this is to use the print profile for the media type and to soft proof the image in Photoshop before printing it. See our Guides and Tips for instructions on soft proofing.
